You will have far more success in assembling this piece if you keep to the code and remember the directions are more like guidelines than actual rules.Construction took me about 7 hours using an electric drill, but that includes some time for creative cursing and scratching my head trying to figure out how to make it work. In terms of the directions, I had to employ relabeling/repurposing of parts, drill a couple of my own holes, and use some spare fasteners I had left over from other projects.My biggest piece of advice: attach the drawer slides to the drawers AFTER they have been linked together (unlike what the directions indicate).The bed is clearly marked with a 400lb max weight capacity (which is one of the reasons I bought it) and I am generally pleased on that front. My two girls (weighing about 150lb total) climb up and down and it is very solid even without being attached to the wall.It is not as tall as I expected. When I was comparing loft beds I was paying the most attention to the weight capacity as a proxy for sturdiness, desk dimensions, and customer ratings. I wish I had also paid attention to the bed height. Even my petite 9-year old has to hunch over when moving around in the desk area.On the flip side, the bed rails are a decent height. I bought a 5-inch mattress and there is a lot of clearance for the safety rails such that I am sure a 6-inch mattress would be fine as well.Overall, construction materials are pretty good for the price-point. Nobody would ever mistake this for a high-end piece of furniture, but it is totally functional for a kids room.Once constructed, there are many spare holes in such a way that I believe it is reversible (you can put the ladder, cabinet/drawers, etc. on the other side. I did just that by putting the ladder on the opposite end from the drawers because it made more sense for the room.Overall, if I had it to do over again, I would probably buy one of the alternatives that have more headroom in the desk area. But if you don't mind that or the assembly headache, this bed is a decent choice.
